In support of cooperation in Science, the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent organized the visit of Jonah H. Schein, a Policy Analyst from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to the Urgench State University and our NGO. On December 18, 2017 KRASS team had discussions with Mr. Schein, who gave an overview of the water resources management and water conservation in drought conditions in the USA. Watch also

In December 2017, the research needs and opportunities of ecotourism in protected areas of Khorezm and Karakalpakstan were discussed with Prof. Stan McGahey, a USA Fulbright program scholar and a visiting lecturer at the Urgench State University teaching the International tourism and Hospitality Management.

Prof. Michael Brody, a US Fulbright Scholar and a visiting lecturer teaching Environmental Science at the National University of Uzbekistan, gave a lecture at the Urgench State University and visited KRASS.

Inna Rudenko took part in the International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) by the U.S. Department of State, entitled “Our Planet - Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation”. The meetings and site visits highlighted U.S. policies and public-private sector strategies for maintaining, managing, and protecting national and state parks, monuments, heritage sites and wilderness areas. On September 13, 2017 we met with the experts from GIZ Regional Programme for Sustainable and Climate Sensitive Land Use for Economic Development in Central Asia and the State Forestry Committee of Uzbekistan. Field visits were held to the Lower Amudarya state biosphere reserve, where KRASS collaborates with the Michael Succow Foundation for Nature Protection on testing of sustainable, climate and site-adapted land-use concepts and development of environmental education in the protected areas.

Yulduzoy Djumaniyazova and Elena Kan participated in the annual international conferenceb ‘Tropentag 2017, Future Agriculture: Social-ecological transitions and bio-cultural shifts’. The conference was organized by the University of Bonn and the ‘Centre for Development Research’, Bonn, Germany on 20-22nd of September, 2017. Elena presented poster about “Communication strategy for the conservation of flood-plain forests in the Amudarya river basin, Uzbekistan”, whilst Yulduzoy gave a presentation on “Evapotranspiration-Based Irrigation Scheduling for Cotton in the Aral Sea Basin, Central Asia”. On June 29, 2017 we met with the experts from FAO Subregional office in Central Asia. Together with Oleg Guchgeldiev (Focal Point for Climate Change), Sara Marjani Zadeh (Water and Land resources expert), Hafiz Muminjanov (Plant specialist) and Aziz Nurbekov (Agronomist FAO in Uzbekistan) we discussed our potential cooperation in the area of conservation agriculture and promotion of sustainable land and water management practices among the local crop producers.

On June 14, 2017 during the visit to the Urgench State University, the prospects of collaboration on ecotourism development in protected areas has been discussed with Dr. Elena Golisheva, the Director of the Republican center of professional development and retraining of staffs in sphere of tourism under the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Tourism Development. A collaborative project on enhancing capacities of local tour guides in environmental topics and ecotourism concepts was discussed.

On June 7, 2017 we had a visit by the Science Envoy Delegation of USA Embassy in Uzbekistan: Dr. Linda Abriola, USA President Ambassador on science; Hayli Smith, coordinator of the US State Department on scientific and technical cooperation affairs, Claire Thomas, US Embassy deputy Secretary in environmental science, technology and health care affairs, Yekaterina Biryukova, Specialist on environmental science, technology and health care affairs. The delegates were introduced to our experiences on improved practices for efficient land and water management, as well as our activities on environmental education in the protected areas.

On May 13, 2017 we had a visit by BMBF Delegation, Division 213: Cooperation with Eastern Partnership Countries, Russia, Central Asia. Our NGO was developed with Alumni of the 10-year ZEF-UNESCO research project in the Khorezm region, funded by the German Ministry BMBF. The Urgench State University was a major partner in this BMBF-funded project. The meeting was attended by the rector of the Urgench State University, vice-rectors, university researchers and KRASS team. Following presentations about our experiences and on-going activities, the research sites were visited.

On February 15, 2017 we had a visit by the delegation within the frame of UN Joint Programme “Building of resilience of communities affected by the Aral Sea disaster through the Multi-Partner Human Security Fund for the Aral Sea”, (2016-2019). The delegation arrived with the aim to conduct an assessment of progress and gather good practices and lessons learned from the completed programme “Sustaining Livelihoods Affected by the Aral Sea Disaster” (2012-2016). KRASS participated in the UN Joint programme by organizing the capacity building trainings for farmer extension agents and seminars on innovative agricultural technologies.

On April 11, 2017 Liliana Sin and Elena Kan participated in the International Conference on Development of Sustainable Tourism in Uzbekistan (the Case of Karakalpakstan) in Nukus, Karakalpakstan. The event has been jointly organized by the UNESCO Tashkent representative office, Senate of Oliy Majlis of Republic of Uzbekistan, Latvian Embassy in Tashkent, State Committee of Development of Tourism, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, UNWTO, UNDP Uzbekistan. The Conference was organized in the framework of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Elena gave a presentation on nature-based tourism and experiences of project by KRASS on collaboration with the Michael Succow Foundation for Nature Protection. Brief talk on project communication strategy for the conservation of tugay ecosystems was given to the national independent radio station “Uzbekistan online”. Prior to the conference, NGO KRASS has been requested by UNESCO Tashkent representative office to draft recommendations on ecotourism development in protected areas of Uzbekistan. The main output of the event is the outline of recommendations on sustainable tourism development addressed to the Ministries and relevant decision-making organizations. Read more: here
